THE RISK
Launching over the handlebars often ends with the rider in a head-first collision - an injury mechanism that can lead to spinal cord injury.
While neck braces may protect against hyperflexion injuries, it does not lower the crushing forces delivered down the spine in head-first impacts.
In British Columbia alone, a staggering 43 cases of spinal cord injuries due to mountain biking were recorded during a 13 year period, with at least one person permanently paralyzed each year.
